The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has issued a fresh press statement addressing the ongoing legal battle involving its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, following the filing of his appeal against a terrorism conviction and life sentences handed down by the Federal High Court in Abuja.
In the statement signed by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the group confirmed that Kanu’s Notice of Appeal was filed on February 4, 2026, at the Court of Appeal, Abuja. According to IPOB, the appeal challenges several aspects of the judgment, including alleged procedural irregularities, claims of insufficient evidence, and what it described as limitations on the defendant’s right to a fair hearing.
The organisation also raised concerns about detention arrangements, alleging that Kanu’s placement in a distant correctional facility created logistical and financial burdens for his legal team and supporters. IPOB argued that these conditions complicated access to legal representation and preparation for the appeal process. These claims have not been independently confirmed by the judiciary or prison authorities.
In addition to legal issues, IPOB used the statement to comment on Nigeria’s broader security environment, linking ongoing attacks and unrest in parts of the country to deeper governance challenges. The group urged the Federal Government to focus on addressing insecurity while ensuring fairness and transparency in politically sensitive cases.
IPOB reiterated its demand for Kanu’s immediate release, stating that justice and national stability are closely connected. It further warned that unresolved grievances could continue to fuel political tension and public mistrust.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Federal Government nor the judiciary had issued a formal response to the latest claims made by the group. IPOB remains a proscribed organisation under Nigerian law, and security agencies have consistently warned against activities associated with it.
Observers note that the appeal process is likely to draw significant national attention as legal arguments unfold and the courts review the grounds presented by Kanu’s legal team.
